  1. Gamification on payout data removes the "two numbers" problem: contest and statement figures come from one calculation and one audit log.
  2. In a survey of 1,409 sales professionals in France, 61.9% of reps using a commission tool exceeded their targets, compared with 30.1% on spreadsheets (Qobra x Modjo study, 2024).
  3. Compass is the only one of the eight with a published per-user, gamification-oriented price: £29.99 per user per month for the first 100 users (getcompass.ai, Sept 2026).
  4. A cash contest prize is paid like any commission: it is added to the pay period's earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll (gov.uk), and its cost is an IFRS 15 question for Finance (ifrs.org).
  5. Qobra runs contests as challenges on the commission plan, with performance notifications, Slack updates, multi-step approvals and an audit log (qobra.co, Sept 2026).

Sales gamification and commission software means one system that runs contests, SPIFFs, leaderboards and performance notifications on the same deal and payout data that produces commission statements. Each contest is a component of the compensation plan, so the prize is calculated, approved and paid in the regular commission run. This guide compares eight platforms on contest, SPIFF and gamification features: Qobra, Everstage, Compass (formerly Xoxoday Compass), Spiff by Salesforce, CaptivateIQ, QuotaPath, Varicent and Performio. It also covers contest ideas, costly mistakes, how cash prizes go through UK payroll, and pricing.

A note on terms: a SPIFF (sales performance incentive fund) is a short-term bonus paid for a specific sale or behaviour. Spiff by Salesforce, one of the eight platforms, is commission software sold as a Sales Cloud add-on; Salesforce completed its acquisition of Spiff on 1 February 2024 (Salesforce SEC filings).

Gamification inside the commission platform vs a standalone sales gamification tool

A standalone sales gamification tool (Ambition, SalesScreen and Spinify are examples of the category) takes its own CRM feed and shows contests and rankings, while a commission platform or a spreadsheet calculates payouts. In the integrated model, the contest is a plan component that runs on the plan's data, approvals and audit trail.

The standalone model still has a place for unpaid activities, such as calls booked, and for recognition prizes. Once a contest pays cash, the number on the screen has to be the number on the statement, and Finance will ask who approved it and what it cost.

Criteria Gamification inside the commission platform Standalone sales gamification tool
Data source The deal and payout data behind the statements, synced from the CRM A separate CRM or spreadsheet feed, mapped and maintained for the tool
Trust and disputes One number: contest and statement figures come from one calculation and one audit log Two numbers: the ranking and the statement can disagree, and reps dispute both
Payout Calculated with the commission run, approved, exported to payroll Winners identified in the tool, then entered separately in the commission system or payroll
Admin effort One plan editor, one rule set, one approval flow A second admin surface, a second data mapping, a second reconciliation each period
Cost line No additional tool: the contest is a plan component A separate subscription and a separate renewal
Who owns it RevOps or Finance, with Sales as the user Sales management or enablement, outside Finance controls

If your contests still run on a whiteboard or a shared spreadsheet, our post on digitising sales challenges is the place to start.

Why leaderboards need payout data

The "two numbers" problem starts when separate systems feed the leaderboard and the statement: one counts a deal as soon as it is marked closed-won, the other applies plan rules, splits, clawbacks and effective dates. When the two disagree, reps trust neither.

On a commission platform, the contest reads the same data as the statement. Qobra syncs deals in real time from Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics, Zoho, Pipedrive and Odoo, applies the plan rules and shows the result in the rep's dashboard (qobra.co, Sept 2026).

Notifications turn that data into motivation while the deal is still fresh. Qobra describes its performance notifications as a gamified, real-time experience for reps, and its Slack integration brings the same updates into the team channel (qobra.co/sales, Sept 2026).

Disputes stay in the same system: a contest dispute is a claim on a deal-level statement, logged like any other payout query. Our guide to sales commission tracking software covers that tracking layer in more detail.

How we evaluated: vendor websites and pricing pages checked in September 2026; review-site ratings and analyst reports were not used. "Not verified" means the criterion was not checked, not that the vendor lacks it. Prices are vendor list prices, shown in £, and may change.

Who each platform fits (vendor websites, Sept 2026):

  • Qobra fits mid-market B2B teams that want contests and commissions on one engine, because challenges run through the same approvals and audit log as statements.
  • Everstage fits mid-market RevOps teams that want gamification with forecasting, because the vendor offers both, plus Slack and Microsoft Teams updates.
  • Compass fits multi-geo, frontline and channel sales forces, because it is built around incentive, SPIFF and contest programmes and ships a native mobile app.
  • Spiff by Salesforce fits Salesforce-centric revenue teams, because SPIFFs are set up inside Salesforce and the leader dashboard shows pacing and rankings.
  • CaptivateIQ fits finance-led teams with complex plans, because SPIFFs are modelled spreadsheet-style and run with bonuses and MBOs under version control.
  • QuotaPath fits SMB and mid-market teams on HubSpot or Salesforce, because SPIFF set-up is self-serve and reps see earnings inside HubSpot.
  • Varicent fits territory- and quota-driven enterprises, because SPIF programmes and MBOs run with the main plan behind a full audit trail.
  • Performio fits enterprises with commission data across systems, because bonuses, MBOs and KPIs run with the main plan and reps get a mobile app.

For UK buyers who want a local team: Qobra has had a London office since June 2024, and Varicent has offices in London and Bucharest (vendor websites, Sept 2026). We did not verify a UK office for the other six vendors.

Sales Commission Software Buyer's Guide

‍

How to run a sales contest end to end in Qobra

Qobra is a sales compensation platform with offices in London, Paris and New York. Over €1 billion in commissions has been certified on the platform, across 300+ companies (qobra.co). A contest in Qobra is a challenge on the commission plan, built with existing sales compensation platform features.

Step 1: Design the contest as a challenge on the plan

In the no-code plan editor, add the challenge to the existing plan with its eligibility, dates, qualifying deals and payout rule. Set a budget cap, then simulate the cost on live CRM data before launch. Qobra's plan-building agent also takes the change in natural language, such as "add a SPIFF" (qobra.co, Sept 2026). Our post on how to set up a sales challenge covers the design choices.

Step 2: Reps follow the contest in their dashboard and Slack

Reps see challenge KPIs next to live earnings in a custom sales dashboard, with real-time performance notifications and Slack updates (qobra.co/sales, Sept 2026).

A ranked view of the contest across the team: Qobra leaderboard view. The "Explain my comp" assistant tells a rep why a deal did not count, from the plan rules and deal data (qobra.co, Sept 2026).

Statements

Step 3: Managers review results and claims

Managers see the same real-time dashboards as reps and review claims in the dispute workflow; manual adjustments carry a reason code. Our guide to the steps to organise a sales challenge covers the review cadence.

Step 4: Pay the prize with the monthly commission run

The same engine calculates the prize and the base commission, and multi-step approvals run before payroll. Qobra exports the payout by CSV or SFTP to any payroll system, or through HRIS connectors for Workday, BambooHR and HiBob (qobra.co/integrations, Sept 2026). UK payroll software such as Sage, Xero or BrightPay is reached through that CSV or SFTP export.

Once approved before the payroll cut-off, the prize is paid with that month's salary, and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax and Class 1 National Insurance are deducted as for any commission (gov.uk). Our guide to automating sales incentive and bonus payouts covers the monthly hand-off to payroll in more detail.

Sales contest ideas that work with commission data

Before choosing a format, agree what the contest should change; our post on the reasons to run a sales challenge is a useful starting point. The cheapest contest is one the commission platform already measures, such as these six:

  • New-logo sprint. Pay a flat SPIFF per new-logo deal this quarter, and more above a set count. Eligibility comes from synced CRM account fields.
  • Multi-year deal bonus. Pay a bonus on multi-year contracts at signature or first invoice, using the contract length the engine already reads.
  • Pipeline hygiene challenge. Reward reps whose open opportunities keep a next step and a close date all month; the score updates from synced CRM fields.
  • Expansion challenge. Pay account managers a SPIFF on upsell and cross-sell revenue alongside the base commission, since expansion deals share the new-business CRM feed.
  • Team relay. Pay everyone when the region's closed deals reach a shared goal; the engine that handles base-plan splits handles the shared prize.
  • First to quota. A fixed prize for the first reps to reach quota costs nothing else to run, because attainment is already tracked.

More formats are in Qobra's SPIFFs and sales challenges playbook. Our examples of sales challenges add further variations. For incentives beyond contests, see our sales incentive ideas. For SPIFF mechanics, see our comparison of SPIFF software.

4 gamification mistakes that cost money

1. Paying on unverified data

A contest paid from a spreadsheet export or a standalone tool inherits upstream errors: field audits of operational spreadsheets found cell error rates of 0.4% to 2.5% (Panko, 2008), and one deal can decide a contest. The fix: pay only from the commission engine's verified data.

2. Contests that stack on accelerators without a rule

A SPIFF on the same deals as a quarter-end accelerator can double the marginal cost of the period's last deals. The fix: write into the plan whether the contest stacks, is capped or replaces the accelerator, before the contest starts.

In the UK, put those rules in writing and give them to each rep. Changing contractual commission terms generally needs the rep's agreement, so collect each rep's written acknowledgement or agreement before a change applies. Once a prize has been earned, cutting it can be challenged as an unauthorised deduction from wages (Employment Rights Act 1996, section 13), since "wages" under section 27 include any bonus or commission. Our guide to changing a sales compensation plan mid-year covers the process when rules have to change.

3. No audit trail of who won and why

A winner announced from a screenshot leaves no answer to a rep's "why not me" and no evidence for an auditor. The fix: log every plan and payout change with user, timestamp and before/after values, as Qobra's audit log does (qobra.co, Sept 2026). Our guide to commission audit trail software compares how vendors log changes.

4. Paying prizes outside payroll and ignoring IFRS 15

In the UK, a cash prize is treated like any commission: the employer adds it to the employee's other earnings and deducts PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance through payroll (gov.uk guidance on bonuses). HMRC's National Insurance Manual lists bonuses and commission among the forms of reward that count as remuneration (NIM02010). Unlike in the US, there is no flat withholding rate for bonuses: the prize simply joins that month's pay, and a prize paid outside payroll leaves the employer with a PAYE problem.

Vouchers, trips and other non-cash prizes follow their own rules: tax treatment of non-cash contest prizes (taxable benefit, PAYE Settlement Agreement): check with payroll.

The fix: pay every cash prize through payroll in the monthly pay run, and flag its cost to Finance. Under IFRS 15, which UK-listed groups apply as UK-adopted IFRS, incremental costs of obtaining a contract, such as sales commissions, are recognised as an asset when the company expects to recover them, then amortised. A practical expedient allows them to be expensed when the amortisation period would be one year or less (IFRS 15, paragraphs 91 to 94, ifrs.org). Whether a given contest prize is such a cost is a judgement for Finance. For companies reporting under FRS 102 rather than IFRS. Our guide to accrued commission covers the accounting side.

Pricing (2026)

Three of the eight platforms publish prices. Compass lists £29.99 per user per month for the first 100 users, with a 50-user minimum (getcompass.ai, Sept 2026). Spiff by Salesforce lists £75 per user per month billed annually, plus £250 per month per additional external connector (salesforce.com, Sept 2026). QuotaPath lists Growth at £35 per user per month plus a £525 monthly platform fee (vendor website, Sept 2026).

The other five are quote-based, with onboarding, set-up or implementation fees at Everstage, CaptivateIQ and Performio (vendor websites, Sept 2026). Qobra prices by payees and plan complexity.

Standalone gamification tools add a separate budget line. Weigh it against the cost of a second data mapping and reconciliation each period. List prices change, so confirm current pricing with each vendor before you budget.

FAQ

Compare sales incentive platforms that offer automated performance tracking and gamified leaderboards

Spiff by Salesforce shows pacing and rankings in its leader dashboard (salesforce.com, Sept 2026). Varicent offers gamified SPIF views, Everstage and Compass name gamification as a capability, and Qobra runs challenges with performance notifications and Slack updates (vendor websites, Sept 2026). All eight connect to a CRM to update attainment.

What are the best tools for managing incentive compensation that include real-time sales gamification?

Shortlist commission platforms where contests run on real-time payout data. Qobra fits mid-market B2B teams because challenges run on the same engine and audit log as statements, and it has had a London office since June 2024 (qobra.co, Sept 2026). Compass fits large frontline teams because it has a native mobile app (vendor website, Sept 2026).

Show me platforms that handle commission management while supporting sales team gamification features

Eight platforms compared here handle incentive compensation: Qobra, Everstage, Compass, Spiff by Salesforce, CaptivateIQ, QuotaPath, Varicent and Performio. Vendor websites (Sept 2026) confirm gamification features for Qobra (challenges, performance notifications), Everstage and Compass (gamification), Spiff (rankings) and Varicent (gamified SPIF views); check the other three before choosing.

What are good sales contest ideas for a B2B sales team?

Pick contests the commission platform already measures: a new-logo sprint, a multi-year deal bonus, a pipeline hygiene challenge, an expansion challenge, a team relay or a first-to-quota race. Put eligibility, dates and the payout rule in writing before launch. Qobra's SPIFFs and sales challenges playbook has more formats.

Do sales leaderboards actually improve performance?

The evidence covers commission visibility, not leaderboards alone. In a survey of 1,409 sales professionals in France, 61.9% of reps using a commission tool exceeded their targets, compared with 30.1% on spreadsheets (Qobra x Modjo study, 2024). A leaderboard helps when its number is the payout number.

How do you pay out a sales contest through payroll?

Pay the prize as a SPIFF in the monthly commission run, after manager and Finance approval and before the payroll cut-off. Qobra exports the payout by CSV or SFTP to any payroll system (qobra.co/integrations, Sept 2026), including UK software such as Sage, Xero or BrightPay. Payroll adds it to that month's earnings and deducts PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance, as for salary (gov.uk).
